First of all let me say that I still really like Global Bikes - they do not pay me to say things like this (although I would take their money). They have an online meet up group (my work computer is restricted because 'meeting up' is classified under 'dating/relationships') where coordinators schedule and host rides. I have been offered to lead some rides and hope to one day but would like to get a bit more experience in my lycra first. There have been many that have wanted to join in on but have always felt intimidated (one is called 'Girls Gone Riding' - the name alone intimidates me). I finally did though decide to 'meet up' and was given a glowing referral of the group leader.
I woke early Saturday morning and got all my gear ready. I loaded up in the truck and made my way to the bagel shop where we were meeting. After parking Fred rolled up and introduced himself. He explained that it was likely to be just he and I because of the heat few people venture out. He was right. My first group ride turned out to just be a double ride. I was fine with this thought because I had Fred to myself and was able to optimize my time with a pro (Fred - I will accept money from you too for this flattery).
Fred looked over my bike and said I had a nice set up. He mentioned having seen the blog and after just a few minutes of small talk we set off. We went through the neighborhood and Fred explained that he really liked the area because of their tolerance for cyclists and the hills. I found both to be very enjoyable as well. This post is getting really long so I think I am going to go to the bullet point format:
Liked:
- The hills
- Pecos Road
- Knowing how fast I was going (Fred kept yelling it out)
- Trailing someone (it does make a difference)
- Being pushed / Testing my perceived limits
- Cheap advice - Fred knows his stuff and was fun to talk to
- Getting two flats
- Attempted littering
- Not meeting more people
- Having to leave early due to two flats
- Not getting any pictures
