What it takes to be called a cyclist

One of my bullet points of things to get around to writing about was why I am beginning to consider myself a cyclist.  Don't get me wrong, I have a long ways to go and the need for constant improvement will always be there but if there was a check list of things to consider I would have a couple checked off.

For instance:
  • I have completed a century (and a 95 miler that was likely a century too if it was mapped right)
  • I wear all the gear - in public
  • I am obsessed with several cycling blogs
  • I feel the constant need to buy more and better gear
  • I have commuted to work (twice sort of)
  • I held my own with a seasoned rider (although I am sure if he wanted to he could have killed me in a sprint or endurance race)
Most recently though the two items I could check off are:

Be turned to for cycling advice - I have had a couple of people ask me for advice on what bike to buy and where or how to ride.  By text, email, phone, and Facebook I have been asked questions and been able to give my thoughts on matters specific to cycling.  I am by no means a pro and know a very small amount in all honestly but the thing to note here is that I am giving the impression of being someone that others can turn to.  That gets me a little closer to being a full fledged cyclist right?

Have met and made friends with people who are also cyclist through cycling - These may be a bit premature but is worth listing.  I went on a group ride Saturday and met two other guys about the same experience level who are looking for someone to ride with.  The plan now is to go out tomorrow morning for this ride:

The addition of these two items to the list of "what it takes to be a cyclist" (a list that would be fun to make or locate) brings me a little bit closer to reaching one of my goals.  I will provide an update on tomorrow's ride tomorrow.

What do you say we make a list - sounds fun - What does it take to be called a cyclist?
